Betterburnt on Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn: Melbourne’s Best Basque Cheesecakes! The store has built a strong following for its Basque cheesecakes, known for their ultra creamy centre and wide range of flavours.
Focused on quality ingredients and freshness, the cheesecakes are baked in small batches to ensure a smooth, creamy centre. All of Betterburnt’s Basque cheesecakes are made using pasteurised ingredients, are gluten free and vegetarian.
Having started as a lockdown project in 2020, the Hawthorn store opened in March 2025, bringing the Betterburnt experience into a physical space.
In store, a rotating selection of flavours is available daily by the slice or as whole cakes. Customers can explore different Basque cheesecake flavours through sampling, with seating available inside and out for those who wish to enjoy a slice and barista coffee on site. The shop has become a go to destination for locals as well as Basque cheesecake lovers from across Melbourne.
Whole cakes can be pre ordered through the website, with more than 15 flavours available, including celebration cakes with toppings. Each cake is baked and garnished to order to ensure it is made as close to pick-up as possible.
Betterburnt: Melbourne’s Best Basque Cheesecakes
In its first year, Betterburnt has sold over 5000 whole cakes and more than 30,000 slices.
Owner Kai Yee Ho combines pastry experience at Lune Croissanterie with training in commercial cookery at William Angliss and a background in Chemical Engineering to achieve Betterburnt’s signature creamy texture.
“I’ve always focused on getting the texture right. That soft, creamy centre is what makes a Basque cheesecake really special,” says Kai.
“The best seller since day one has been the Original Basque. Other popular flavours include Yuzu, Pistachio, Pandan, Matcha and Nutella.”
Seasonal flavours are released throughout the year, including mango in summer, eggnog during Christmas and limited specials such as Hot Cross Basque for Easter.
Betterburnt focuses on creamy texture, small batch baking and a wide variety of flavours, whether enjoyed by the slice or as a whole cake for celebrations.
